This simple watermelon basket brings the party to your next potluck.
Ever need to bring something festive to a potluck and all you have on hand is a nice watermelon and some mint? This fits almost every dietary variation and is super refreshing on a hot afternoon!
I was inspired by the potluck host's shabby chic/vintage style and thought of a melon ball basket with scallop details. This was easier and faster than I thought it would be.
What you'll need:
After taking a thin slice off the base to stabilize, carve the design with a paring knife. Watermelons are easier to cut than pumpkins!
Make cuts from top to approximately midway (I went with three bat-wing shapes) at least an inch deep, and remove just the first shape.
Mellon ball time: From this one opening, start spinning that melon ball tool like a banshee! Imperfection of the balls is an advantage as you'll see soon.
Scoop and scoop some more until it's time to lift out the next section and then the next. You'll want to drain the juice into your spare container periodically to keep balling.
After scooping all the melon balls you can, scrape the melon interior a bit. No need to go nuts, just even out the inside surface, working more gently on the basket handle surfaces.
Time to put the balls into the basket. The imperfect spheres keep them from rolling back out above the scallop line. 2 ball sizes make it easier, too.
With the basket in a serving bowl, use the cut away parts to help stabilize - especially if you're traveling to that potluck!
