Ovation

Ovation

It was a mild winter until recently, and now that days are lengthening, the first eggs of the season have arrived!

At Filomena Farm, hens rest and molt and lay low through the darker months with plenty of food, water, and deep bedding with the occasional garden forage.

As days lengthen, the hens have more time to see. Being on the typical chicken’s see-food diet, they eat more. The red of their combs gets brighter and their abundance of fuel leads to egg production!

Miss Cleo the psychic chicken was first to lay and Ona is getting busy.

Our oldest hen is Estelle Von Hamburg a.k.a. Stella, a lovely medeterainian Silver Spangled Hamburg, who turns 10 years old right about today!

She lays petite cream-colored eggs and produced many for a couple months last year. We shall see what she does this year.
